, in gaza city. alex? >> reporter: good evening, diane. we've heard some very loud explosions all around us tonight as israeli missiles land. we've heard the disting woosh of outgoing rockets at hamas returns fire. tonight, it sees this burst of violence is only getting worse. all day long, rockets filled the bright blue sky, gaza militants firing on israel. at least one rocket landed tonight in tel aviv, israel's commercial capital. sirens blared. residents hit the ground. three israelis were killed earlier when a rocket hit their apartment in the south. this as israeli warplanes pounded the gaza strip. its target? militant groups, most notably, hamas. but caught in the cross-fire, at least 12 civilian, including that 11-month-old boy. "what did my son do to die like this?" his father cried. this is what the aftermath of one of these strikes looks like. a massive crater filled with cinderblock and rebar, with a strong smell of diesel fuel, several of the houses around were damaged very badly. and the residents here on this street tell us they hope hamas and the other groups keep firing roc

alarmed by the e-mails, she called the fbi. those friends also tell us the general's wife, holly petraeus, is furious with her husband. you see her here at his confirmation hearings back in august of 2011, broadwell sitting just a few seats away. petraeus insists they weren't having an affair then, which leads us to the first big question -- when did the affair begin? petraeus' friends claim it started around november 2011, two months after he took over the cia, an important point, since he could be tried under military law for adultery. >> it didn't begin when he was in the army. >> reporter: but many who know the general suspect it began months earlier in afghanistan. it was september 2010 that broadwell made her first of six visits to petraeus in the warzone after being granted extraordinary access to write the book about him. >> when i was in kabul, we would do a lot of interviews on runs. for him, i think it was a good distraction from the war. >> reporter: question two -- when did the fbi get involved? it was around may or june that the fbi was tracing those threatening e-mails sens

've got a lot more invest game to do. >> and john is with us now. a question a lot of people are going to be asking, did anyone smell gals beforehand? >> reporter: no, and that's what's so puzzling. no reports of any smells of gas in the days leading up to the blast. now, to give you an idea just how powerful it was, this is only a flew block radius of the blast, but it could be felt three miles away. >> john, thank you. our abc team on the scene all day today. drew smith, among the first to get inside that neighborhood and he reported in just a short time ago here. >> reporter: david, there's just massive destruction here inside this richmond hills subdivision on the southeast side of indianapolis. you can see there are bulldozers out here. people are trying to get everything cleaned up. what used to be five homes less than 24 hours ago are nothing more than rubble. at least 80 homes affected by the blast that went off shortly after 11:00 eastern time last night. windows blown out. and you can see the cleanup here is going to take quite some time. authorities are working with federal

. they told us they've simply seen too many agreed to and then broken. david? >> alex marquardt in gaza city tonight. alex, thank you. men while, rockets from gaza are reaching deep into israel. sending families into shelters. abc's matt gutman is in israel tonight. >> reporter: good evening, david. there are thousands of israeli troops massing on the gaza border right now, just a few miles south of me. but there's been no deterrent for the rain of rockets that have slammed into here. four of them in this town alone, four of them where i'm standing. in this surveillance video, you see the plume of shrapnel and smoke engulfing the building, a car shredded. just today over 100 such rockets were lobbed into israel, nearly half intercepted by the iron dome defense system. the missile system which the u.s. helped develop has been knocking rockets out of the sky. instantly, radar detects rockets trajectory, firing an intercepting missile. so far the system has knocked out over 300 rockets, with a stunning 90% kill rate. israel has authorized the call-up of 7 can,000 reserves. tanks are already mas
